Welcome to Riffelalp Resort 2'222m

Keepers of the hut

Since the Riffelalp Resorts 2'222m was planned (1998), the values of Hans-Jörg Walthers - peace, nature and warm hospitality at 2'222m above sea level - have reigned. The wishes of guests and the feasibility of what can be offered on the mountain have characterised the current offering at the foot of the Matterhorn. The Riffelalp Resort is a haven of peace in the middle of the skiing and hiking area of Zermatt, where the pace of life is slow.

Hans-Jörg Walther lives and breathes the art of holiday hotels. His education in the renowned hotel management school in Lausanne was complemented with journeyman years spent in holiday hotels. His wife, Claudia, also comes from a family of hotel owners.

An untouched treasure

Our History

The groundwork for Riffelalp Resort 2'222m was first laid in 1878 by hotelier Alexander Seiler, opening as a summer retreat for the European elite. Though a mountain railway and tiny red tramway now bring guests to our doorstep, we’re as unruffled and car-free as we were back then.

Riffelalp Tram

Tram 2001

More than a way to get around, the Riffelalp Tram is part of the Riffelalp experience. Originally introduced in 1899 and thoughtfully reimagined in 2001, it quietly connects the resort with Riffelalp railway station as Europe's highest tramway. Today, its modern battery-powered trams continue a unique tradition, offering a peaceful journey through the alpine landscape that feels just as timeless as the destination itself.
